The One Where Technology Betrayed Me

Wow, what a day. I have to admit, I'm usually not angry. I'm a pretty happy person who can find something good in almost anything. But this day was different. I woke up angry because of a dream. The day at work was actually pretty okay, just a normal workday. But the evening? That was the furious part.

For a little context, I've been writing a journal every day for about a year now (and I'm proud of myself). I use the Notion app (for those unfamiliar, it's a pretty complex note-taking app). I usually write in the evening, but sometimes I start on my way home from the office, as I spend about 40 minutes on public transport, which is perfect for these activities (or reading, for example). So this day, I wrote almost my entire journal entry on the way home from work. But in the evening, I realized it wasn't saved! I was furious. Notion should save everything immediately to the cloud. So I wrote everything again before going to sleep, only to see in the morning that it wasn't saved either. Why? I have no clue. It hasn't happened before, but it made me absolutely furious.

Another reason for anger in the afternoon - the WiFi didn't work almost at all. When I came home, it wasn't even able to connect, so I restarted the router (the box thing that makes WiFi). That at least connected it so we were able to watch TV (HBO, we don't watch regular TV). But in the evening, when I wanted to write another blog post, it was really bad. I wanted to load something, and every two minutes it said there was no internet.

Other technology betrayed me this week too. When we're entering our office building, we can either use a key card or scan our palm. I usually just use the scan as it's easy and I don't have to find my card. But these days, the office just doesn't want me inside. Neither of my hands works for the scan, so I had to find the card and use that method instead. Normally, I'd be okay with this, but it's been happening for multiple days now, adding to an already not-so-great week.

But in the end, I was successful. I prepared another post and even set up an Instagram page for my blog, which made me really happy. At least that.

Today's Educational Part: The Importance of Data Backup

As I reflect on my frustrating experience with Notion, I realized how crucial it is to have a reliable backup system. Whether it's a journal entry, important documents, or cherished photos, losing data can be devastating. That's why using cloud storage is so important. Cloud storage allows you to save your files online, so they're accessible from anywhere and automatically backed up.

Here are a few tips to ensure your data is always safe:

  • Use Cloud Services: Apps like Notion, Google Drive, or Dropbox automatically sync your files to the cloud. This means that even if your device fails or you accidentally delete something, your data is still safe online.
  • Regularly Check Sync Status: Sometimes, apps might not sync properly due to internet issues or other glitches. Make it a habit to occasionally check if your files are up-to-date in the cloud.
  • Use Multiple Backup Methods: Consider using more than one backup method, like both cloud storage and an external hard drive. This way, you have multiple copies of your important files.
  • Set Reminders for Manual Backups: If you have files that don't automatically sync, set reminders to manually back them up regularly.

By following these simple steps, you can protect your valuable data and avoid the frustration of losing it. Remember, it's always better to be safe than sorry!
